Daft Punk

Saturday, December 15th, 2007

Tomorrow, the French house robots known as Daft Punk will be on the Perth Esplanade’s grassy lawns for their Nevereverland tour. Guess which two lucky people will be attending?

Travis and I bought tickets as soon as they were released, and now – only less than a day to go! We can hardly contain our excitement.

Initially, Travis was keen on making our own robot costumes. I dismissed this idea, noting it would be too hot in the middle of December to wear such outfits. Unfortunately, tomorrow’s forecast is “cloudy, with rain periods – max 22″. Oh well!

Recently, I re-watched Interstella 555, an animation film featuring the Discovery(2001) Daft Punk album (a particular favourite).

A few months ago, in eager anticipation, Travis and I watched Electroma, a film produced by Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel De Homem-Christo. Somewhere between Sci-fi and indie/arthouse, much of the film is delivered through vivid imagery and centered around themes of existence, and loneliness. I enjoyed this, as it gave a bit more insight into the Daft Punk persona.

So now, the world of the two robots finally come to Perth. Along with their myriad of light effects. And there will be twenty thousand Perthians to greet them, including us.

China flights and hotels

Monday, December 10th, 2007

Differently to our previous holidays our group of friends gave preference to pre-booking all the accommodation. Whilst it will save time running around looking for accommodation it also restricts our freedom as we now have a strict itinerary.

We live in Perth, Western Australia, and we will be flying to Macau on arrival and departure of China. Flying to Macau rather than directly to Hong Kong or a China city is inexpensive; I am also looking forward to seeing the Portuguese style buildings in Macau.

We chose Tiger Airways for our international flights as they are a budget airline who give considerable savings, the prices were as follows:

From Perth to Macau, Saturday 22nd December 2007, total price $1668 AUD
From Macau to Perth, Sunday 13th January 2008, total price $1076 AUD

The following lists our itinerary and the prebooked hotels we will be staying at with prices per night. Generally, we prefer to stay at less costly accommodation but the other members of our travelling group had a preference of 3 to 4 star hotels.

Hong Kong: Dorsett Olympic Hotel, 23rd December to 26th December; $274 AUS

Harbin: Friendship Palace Hotel, 26th December to 29th December; $189 AUS

Beijing: Park Plaza Beijing Wangfujing, 29th December to 3rd January; $438 AUS

Shanghai: City Hotel, 3rd January to 7th January; $291 AUS

Hangzhou: Hua Chen International, 7th January to 9th January; $168 AUS

Xi’an: Gargen Hotel, 9th January to 11th January; $84 AUS

Hong Kong: Prudential Hotel, 11th January to 12th January; $141 AUS

Macau: Hotel Royal, 12th January to 13th January; $980 HKD (excluding taxes)

China, here we come!

In twelve days time, Travis and I will embark on an adventure to one of the world’s oldest civilizations, China. With us, will be eight of our friends who are also counting down the days until we pile on the woolly jumpers and face below zero temperatures.

We started planning our trip in August, and after countless, heated discussions, we decided on an itinerary and booked our flights in mid October. A few minor hiccups (such as how to travel domestically within China) and plentiful debates (Ocean Park or Disneyland?) later, the trip seems to be rolling around faster than expected.

In my excitement, I started creating an array of lists of things to bring a few weeks ago, which I am hoping will assist in my packing. Travis and I are planning to bring along our backpacks (which are 75L and 60L respectively), as our intent is to travel lightly. Hopefully this will deter us from any rash purchases (highly unlikely as we are travelling to the land of the mass produced cheap, instantly gratifying goods).

I’m particularly looking forward to:

  • Visiting the ice sculptures in the north eastern city of Harbin;
  • Eating dumplings in Shanghai;
  • Climbing the Huangshan Mountains;
  • Exploring the historical sites in Beijing; and
  • Wandering the walls of Xian.

Bring it on!

Till then, Zai Jian.
